Church of the Saviour on the Waters

Russian Orthodox church on the hill above the bay, memorial to sailors lost at sea

The Saviour on the Waters (Spas-na-Vodakh) stands on the hill near the Alyosha Monument, a white-walled, five-domed Russian Orthodox church completed in 2002. It functions as a working parish and as a memorial to sailors and submariners lost at sea — the interior carries plaques and lists, including names from the Kursk submarine disaster of 2000.

A separate small lighthouse on the same site is a navigational beacon and another monument; flowers and small offerings often appear at its base. The site is exposed, and even in summer it is cold and windy — but the view down to the working port is one of the most striking in the city.
