Kama River Embankment

The Kama River embankment is the main promenade in Perm, stretching along the river for several kilometres below the city centre. In summer, it fills with locals walking, cycling, and sitting on the stepped terraces that descend toward the water. In winter, sections freeze over and are used for skating.

The view across the Kama is open and wide — the opposite bank is low and forested, making the river look far more like a lake than a river. At certain points you can see the river's distant bend, and on clear evenings the light on the water is striking. A cluster of river cruise boats moor at the embankment in summer, offering trips upstream and downstream. The Perm II railway station, a dignified building from 1909, stands at the eastern end of the embankment and is worth a look.

A story
The Kama River is one of the longest rivers in Russia — over 1800 km — and at Perm it reaches widths of up to four kilometres. When the river is in flood in spring, the embankment becomes a spectacle: the Kama can rise ten metres above its summer level, covering the lower terraces entirely and making the city look almost like a port town.
