Perm-36 (officially the Memorial Museum of the History of Political Repression) is one of the most significant human rights museums in Russia. The site is the remains of an actual Soviet labour camp (corrective labour colony No. 36) that operated from 1946 to 1988, the last Gulag camp in Russia. The preserved barracks, guard towers, isolation cells, and workshop buildings give a physical reality to the abstract knowledge of what the Soviet camp system entailed.
The museum is located about 100 km east of Perm in the village of Kuchino — reachable by car or on organised tours from the city. It is worth the journey. The exhibits document the histories of specific prisoners, the mechanics of the camp system, and the broader history of political repression in the Soviet Union. The experience is sobering in a way that no secondary account can replicate. Note: the museum has faced political pressure in recent years over its interpretation of Soviet history; check current status before visiting.
