The Buryat regional history museum runs from Palaeolithic stone tools through Mongol-era objects, Cossack settlement, Buddhist textiles, and Soviet-period exhibits. The Buddhist hall, with its painted thangkas, ritual instruments and statuary, is the most impressive single section.
Allow 90 minutes. Labelling is mostly Russian but the visual material rewards a wander. The museum sits a short walk from Soviets Square.
