Kalemegdan Fortress

Ancient fortress above the Danube-Sava confluence

Address Kalemegdan Park, Belgrade

Kalemegdan is the historic fortress of Belgrade, perched on a headland above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The site has been fortified continuously since Roman times, and the current complex incorporates Roman remains, medieval Serbian towers, and 18th-century Habsburg artillery bastions. The fortress is surrounded by a large park — one of the most popular green spaces in the city — and offers commanding views over the two rivers and the flat plains beyond. Several small museums are located within the walls, including a military museum.
