Mount Avala

Forested hill south of Belgrade with Avala Tower, memorials, and city-to-countryside views

Mount Avala is Belgrade's easiest break into wooded hills, close enough for a half-day but far enough to change the air. The summit area combines picnic paths, the rebuilt Avala Tower, and the Monument to the Unknown Hero, so it works for both views and a dose of Serbian 20th-century memory.

It is not wild mountain country, and that is part of the appeal. Come when the weather is clear, ride or drive up, and leave time to walk between the tower and the memorial rather than treating the hill as a photo stop. The city feels very different from up here, spread across the plains to the north.
