Sombor

Leafy Vojvodina city near Hungary and Croatia, known for greenery and Habsburg-era civic architecture.

Sombor is a graceful city in Vojvodina, close to both the Hungarian and Croatian borders. It is known in Serbia as a green city, with broad streets, old trees, and an 18th- and 19th-century centre that feels more Habsburg than Balkan in places.

The city is the administrative centre of West Backa and has enough museums, galleries, cafes, and civic architecture for a relaxed day. It is also a practical base for the Gornje Podunavlje wetlands along the Danube, one of the best nature areas in this part of northern Serbia.

Sombor is not as lively as Novi Sad, but that is part of its appeal. Come for slower Vojvodina rhythms, Austro-Hungarian streetscapes, and a borderland feel.
