Church of St. James

Home to the world's tallest surviving Gothic wooden altar, carved 1507–1517

The main draw in Levoča. The Gothic church dates from the 14th century, but what makes it unmissable is the wooden high altar carved by Master Pavol between 1507 and 1517 — at 18.6 metres, the tallest surviving Gothic wooden altar in the world. The central figure of the Madonna is considered his finest work. The church also contains several other altars from Pavol's workshop. Entry requires a ticket and is sometimes restricted during services.
