Podtatranské Museum

The Podtatranské Museum in central Poprad covers the archaeology, history, and natural sciences of the Tatra region. The building itself is a fine early 20th-century structure, and the collections inside include prehistoric finds from Tatra foothills excavations, folk costumes, furniture, and exhibits on the geology and ecology of the High Tatras. It is not large by capital city standards but well curated and easy to spend an absorbing hour in.

Of particular interest is the archaeological collection, which includes Bronze Age and Iron Age material from the Spiš region — an area with a long and rich history that stretches back well before the medieval German settler towns of the 13th century. The natural history section has excellent material on Tatra wildlife, including chamois, lynx, and brown bear.
