Velika Planina is the reason Kamnik clears the day-trip test. The plateau is one of Slovenia's most distinctive alpine places: open pasture, mountain flowers in season, wide views, and a settlement of traditional oval herdsmen's huts that looks unlike the tidy villages below.
The easiest approach is by cable car from the Kamniška Bistrica valley, followed by a chairlift or a walk across the plateau. Hikers can climb up from the valleys, but weather changes quickly and the plateau deserves proper shoes. Summer is the classic season, when cattle are on the pastures and herdsmen sell sour milk and simple mountain food.
