Ukanc

Quiet hamlet at the western tip of the lake, base for the Vogel cable car

Ukanc is the small cluster of houses at the western, wilder end of the lake — much quieter than Ribcev Laz, three kilometres away around the south shore. The Vogel cable car base station is here, as is the lake's only campground and a stone Russian Orthodox chapel, built by Russian prisoners of war who died building a road across the mountains in the First World War. Most of Ukanc is meadow with the forest pressing down to the water; it is the best base if your priority is quiet rather than convenience.

The trail to the Savica waterfall leaves from a car park a short walk further west. Buses connect Ukanc with Ribcev Laz several times a day in summer.
