Lake Bohinj makes a quiet base for trips into the surrounding Julian Alps. The most obvious is Lake Bled, 30 minutes east, which is busier and more developed but worth a half-day for the church on the island and the castle. The Bohinj Railway connects through to the Soca Valley on the other side of the mountains — Most na Soci, Kobarid and Bovec are all reachable in a long day. Kranjska Gora, the ski resort on the Italian-Austrian border, is about an hour's drive over the Vrsic pass in summer (closed in winter).
