Vogel Cable Car

Cable car from Ukanc to a 1535m mountain plateau with huge views

The Vogel cable car rises 1,000 metres in five minutes from the south-western corner of the lake to a high plateau at 1,535 metres. From the top station the view back down onto Bohinj is spectacular, with the lake laid out below and the wall of the Julian Alps — Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak, included — filling the horizon. There is a self-service restaurant, a couple of marked hiking routes that loop back down to the lake (count on five hours to walk down rather than ride), and a small chapel.

In winter the plateau becomes the Vogel ski resort, a compact area of about 22 kilometres of pistes that runs from December into April. Prices are about a third of what you would pay in the Austrian or Swiss Alps, and the snow is generally reliable. The cable car runs year-round.
