Maribor Cathedral

Romanesque-Gothic cathedral dedicated to St John the Baptist

The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is the oldest church in Maribor and the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor. The building has been altered many times over the centuries — the core is Romanesque, with Gothic additions and a Baroque interior that is richer than you might expect from the plain exterior. The belltower dates from the 16th century and is visible from much of the old town.

The interior is worth a slow look. The baptismal chapel, off the south aisle, contains a Romanesque font that dates from the 12th century, one of the oldest objects in the city. The main nave has a coffered ceiling added in the Baroque period, and the choir stalls are elaborately carved. The cathedral is small enough to take in quickly but has enough detail to reward attention.
