The Italian Charnel House stands on a hill above Kobarid, reached by a path that winds up through the town. The domed building contains the remains of 7,014 Italian soldiers killed on the Soča Front between 1915 and 1917. An Italian church adjoins the ossuary. Mussolini visited here in 1938 and delivered a speech; the site was built in the late 1930s as part of Italian memorial policy across the former front.
The views from the terrace of the charnel house over Kobarid and the surrounding valley are extensive. The historical walk that connects this site to the other First World War positions around the town is well-signposted and can be completed in two to three hours.
