Eating Out

The Soča Valley has a distinctive food culture shaped by its mountain and forest setting — trout from the river, mushrooms from the beech forests, mountain cheese, and cured meats. Local restaurants tend to be simple and direct; the exception is Hiša Franko near Kobarid, which is one of the most sophisticated restaurants in Slovenia and has earned international recognition.

In Kobarid, several restaurants and cafes around the main square serve reliable local cooking at moderate prices. Trout is available at most places in the valley — the river has historically been regarded as one of the finest trout-fishing streams in Europe.
