Soča Trail

The Soča Trail (Soška pot) is a marked walking route that follows the Soča River from its source near the Vršič Pass to the Italian border, covering about 25 kilometres with manageable ascent. It passes through gorges, over suspension footbridges, and through the heart of Triglav National Park in the upper valley. The trail can be walked in sections — day walks from Bovec cover the most spectacular stretches near the town.

The river is extraordinarily blue-green throughout its length, and the trail offers constant access to its banks. Highlights include the Napoleon Bridge (a stone arch bridge from the era of French occupation), the Soča Gorge near Bovec where the river narrows to a slot barely wide enough to squeeze through, and the Great Soča Gorge further upstream.

A story
The Soča gets its colour from fine suspended particles of limestone, ground by glaciers and washed into the river from the karst plateau above. The colour is most intense in summer when the water is low and clear; after heavy rain the river turns brown with suspended sediment. The emerald tone has been documented since at least the 18th century, when it became a subject of wonder for travellers crossing the Julian Alps.
