Arco de la Villa

The Arco de la Villa is the main surviving gateway into Conil's historic walled town. A modest Moorish-influenced arch of whitewashed stone, it marks the entrance from the modern town into the old lanes. The arch itself is not large, but it frames the view into the old town effectively — narrow whitewashed streets falling away into the afternoon shadow.

The gate was part of the medieval wall built to defend the town against pirate raids from the sea. Walking through it into the old town you pass from the slightly scruffy commercial streets of modern Conil into one of the more attractive historic centres on the Costa de la Luz. The transition is abrupt and worth pausing over.
