The Parque Natural de la Breña y Marismas del Barbate protects a long stretch of cliff coast between Conil and Barbate, together with the salt marshes and wetlands inland around the Barbate river. The park is one of the best places on the Costa de la Luz for birdwatching, particularly during spring and autumn migration: the saltmarshes hold waders, herons, and flamingos, while the cliff tops are good for raptors.
The principal walking route is the sendero litoral between Barbate and Caños de Meca, running through the pinewood above the cliffs for about 10 km. It is well-marked and not difficult, with several viewpoints overlooking the sea. The path can be walked in either direction; the village of Los Caños de Meca at the northern end has a beach and a couple of restaurants for the return leg.
The park is open to visitors year-round. Summers are hot enough that the shaded forest path is notably more comfortable than the exposed beaches. In spring, the flowering scrub and migrating birds make it the most rewarding season for walking.
