Orchidarium Estepona

Striking botanical garden with one of Europe's largest orchid collections

Near the marina, the Orchidarium is a botanical garden built around a central glass-roofed rotunda housing a planted waterfall, tropical trees, and the most surprising orchid collection in Andalusia. The climate-controlled interior maintains the conditions of a humid tropical forest, with walkways winding through the planting at multiple levels.

The orchid collection spans species from Asia, Central America, and Africa, many of them in flower throughout the year. The space is designed for photography as much as botany, and the combination of the architecture — elegant and modern — with the colour and variety of the plants makes it worth more than the modest entry fee. Open most days; check locally for hours as they vary seasonally.

A story
The building's design — a series of glass domes over an open courtyard — was intended to mimic the microclimate of a tropical rainforest. The collection runs to over 5,000 individual orchid plants from more than 1,300 species, including many that are endangered in the wild. It opened in 2014 and remains one of the least expected sights on the Costa del Sol.
