Bars and Cafes

Granada is one of the last cities in Spain where bars still serve free tapas with every drink — a tradition that makes an evening out unusually good value. The custom is to order a beer or glass of wine and receive a small plate of food; the more you drink, the more ambitious the tapas tend to get. The best areas are Pedro Antonio de Alarcón for a student crowd, and the streets around Plaza Nueva for a more mixed evening.

The Albaicín has a string of Moroccan-style teterías (tea houses) that stay open late into the night, particularly along Calderería Nueva. These serve dozens of varieties of tea alongside cakes and hookah, and are an agreeable alternative to a bar.
