Elvira Gate

Surviving medieval city gate from Granada's Islamic walls, once the main entrance to the city.

Elvira Gate, or Puerta de Elvira, is one of the clearest surviving fragments of Granada's medieval Islamic city walls. It once formed the principal entrance into the city from the road to Cordoba, and its horseshoe arch still has the blunt authority of a defensive threshold.

You do not need long here, but it is a useful stop because it pulls Granada's history down from the Alhambra into the working city. Stand under the arch and the old urban geography becomes easier to read: gates, walls, trades, and neighbourhoods clustered below the hill.
