The Sierra Nevada ski resort is one of Europe's most southerly, sitting just 30 kilometres from Granada at elevations between 2,100 and 3,300 metres. The mountain is visible from most of the city — the snow-capped peaks that frame Alhambra photographs are these same slopes. The resort operates from December through April in most years, and on a good day you can be at the beach in the morning and skiing in the afternoon (this requires more optimism than most people can sustain, but it is technically possible).
The skiing is best from January to March when conditions are most reliable. The resort town of Pradollano at the base is purely functional but the mountain access is good. A regular bus service runs from Granada city centre to the resort, making a day trip straightforward.
