La Malagueta

City beach district immediately below the bullring, with a promenade and seafood chiringuitos

The coastal district immediately east of the city centre, named for the city beach that sits below the Plaza de Toros (bullring). La Malagueta beach is a kilometre of dark volcanic sand — not the finest in the province but supremely convenient, with easy bus access from the centre and a line of beach restaurants along the back. The beach promenade connects La Malagueta eastward to the fishing barrios of Pedregalejo and El Palo.

The neighbourhood itself is a residential district with some of the city's more attractive 19th-century apartment buildings and a number of good restaurants away from the tourist circuit. The bullring — the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta, built in 1874 in Moorish Revival style — holds bullfights during the August fair and has a small museum open most of the year displaying historic equipment and photographs.
