Vélez-Málaga is the capital of the Axarquía comarca, the hill country east of Málaga that produces some of Andalusia's most distinctive wines and landscapes. The town itself is a compact Moorish and Renaissance layering on a hill below a 14th-century fortress, largely overlooked by visitors who speed past on the coast road to Torre del Mar and the beach. That oversight is their loss: the old town is genuinely pleasant, the castle views are excellent, and the wine culture of the surrounding Axarquía hills is a good reason to linger.
The town divides naturally into the historic upper quarter around the fortress and churches, and the lower commercial centre. The upper quarter repays an unhurried morning: the streets are narrow and steep, the architecture is a mixture of mudéjar and Renaissance, and the views from the fortress over the coastal plain to the Mediterranean are exceptional. Then head down to the coast for the afternoon.
