The Plaza Mayor is the heart of the upper town — small, irregularly shaped, with the casa consistorial (town hall) at one end and a row of arcaded houses on the lower side. The arcades date from the 16th century and are still propped with original wooden columns that have weathered into a deep grey.
It is the obvious place to sit with a coffee or a glass of vermouth and watch the town. The square hosts the weekly market on Friday mornings and is the focal point of the Holy Week and August fiesta processions. Two of the better small restaurants in town open onto the arcades.
