Balneario 6

Balneario 6 is the original beach concession that gave its name to the Ballermann phenomenon. The building on the promenade at S'Arenal has been rebuilt and extended multiple times since the original 1930s structure, but it remains in the same location and continues to function as the de facto headquarters of the German beach-bar scene on the Bay of Palma.

In high season the terrace is packed from the late morning onward with a cheerful crowd working through steins of draft beer and plates of food. It is louder, more crowded, and more chaotically good-humoured than anything you will find in a typical beach bar. Reasonable if you want to experience the Ballermann scene properly; overwhelming if you don't.

A story
The twelve balnearios along this stretch were built in the 1920s and 1930s as "sea bathing establishments" — combination changing rooms, showers, and beach bars at a time when undressing in public was regulated. Most were demolished and rebuilt over subsequent decades, but the numbered concession system survived, with Balneario 6 becoming the symbolic anchor of German beach tourism and eventually lending its name to an entire subculture.
