Porto Pi Lighthouse

The Porto Pi Lighthouse stands on a rocky headland at the western entrance to Palma Bay, marking the point where ships from Barcelona and Valencia historically first approached the island. The lighthouse area makes a good destination for a walk or a bike ride from the city centre along the seafront promenade, about four kilometres from the old town. The headland commands fine views back across the bay to the cathedral and the city.

The immediate area around the lighthouse contains a small marina and some pleasant waterfront cafes. The Portopí shopping centre nearby is not much of a sight, but the waterfront itself — with fishing boats, the yacht club, and the long arc of the bay visible — is a characterful slice of working Palma distinct from the tourist-heavy old town. The lighthouse itself is not open to visitors but can be viewed from outside and photographed easily.

A story
Porto Pi is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. A lighthouse has stood on this rocky point since 1300, making it contemporaneous with the cathedral and Bellver Castle. The current tower, rebuilt in the eighteenth century, continues to guide shipping into the bay.
