Cap des Pinar

Wild peninsula at the northern tip of the bay, partly accessible to hikers

Cap des Pinar is the rocky peninsula that closes off the northern end of Alcudia Bay, and it looks much wilder than the beach resort that sits at its base. The cape is partly a military zone — there is a naval installation here — which has the paradoxical effect of having preserved it remarkably well. The pine forests and rocky coastline are largely untouched by development.

Access is controlled at a checkpoint, and at certain times of year (generally outside summer) hikers can pass through to walk the coastal paths. The views back across the bay from the higher points are the best available anywhere around Puerto de Alcudia — on a clear day you can see the full arc of beach and, beyond it, the Cap de Formentor to the northwest. The lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is the destination most walkers are heading for.

Check current access rules before heading out, as the military uses the zone periodically and restrictions change. When it is open, the walk out to the lighthouse and back takes around three hours at an easy pace. Take water; there are no facilities on the peninsula. The path starts near the Hotel Formentor road junction on the northern edge of Alcudia town.
