Cap de Cavalleria

A dramatic limestone headland at the northernmost tip of Menorca, reached by a narrow road south of Fornells. The lighthouse sits at the cliff edge above a sheer drop to the sea. The surrounding heath is a protected natural area — watch for Egyptian vultures circling the thermals above the cliffs. The road passes through a gate that closes at dusk.

A story
Cap de Cavalleria is the northernmost point of Menorca and, on clear days, the Pyrenees are visible on the horizon — over 200 kilometres away. The Romans called this headland Promontorium Sanisera and had a settlement nearby at Sanitja, whose ruins are still partly visible. The lighthouse was built in 1857 and is still operational; the keeper's cottage has been converted into a small visitors' centre.
