Ses Salines Nature Reserve

A protected wetland area of saltpans and brackish lagoons at the north end of the Bay of Fornells, accessible on foot or by bicycle from the village. The site is a significant stopover for migrating birds, with flamingos being the main draw from October through April. A rough track runs along the western edge of the reserve; bring binoculars.

A story
The salt marshes north of Fornells are among the most important wetland habitats in the Balearics. Greater flamingos appear regularly from autumn through spring — sometimes in groups of 50 or more — along with osprey, marsh harriers, and a wide range of migrating waders. The best time to visit is early morning; the birds are more active and the light off the shallow pans is striking.
