Idafe Rock is a slender basalt pinnacle rising inside the Caldera de Taburiente, accessible by a moderately difficult hiking trail from the caldera floor. The pinnacle is about 40 metres tall and stands alone in the caldera's landscape — dramatic from a distance, otherworldly up close.
For the Benahoarita, the island's pre-Hispanic inhabitants, Idafe was among the most sacred places on La Palma, believed to be a pillar supporting the sky. The rock is now a protected natural monument within the national park. The hike to it is rewarding in its own right, passing through laurel forest and along the caldera streams. The rock is not climbable and the trail requires care; wear proper footwear.
