Ermita de San Saturio

The Ermita de San Saturio is one of the most unexpected sights in Castilla y León — an octagonal Baroque chapel built directly into a cave above the Duero river, reached by a winding path cut into the cliff face south of the city centre. The hermitage was constructed around the cave where San Saturio, a fifth-century ascetic, is said to have lived and died.

The walk to the ermita from town takes about twenty minutes along the river bank. Inside, the Baroque interior has rich painted walls and a reliquary for the saint, and from the terrace outside you look down onto one of the most attractive stretches of the Duero. The chapel is free to enter. An outdoor café near the entrance serves drinks in summer.

A story
San Saturio was a fifth-century hermit who lived in this cave above the Duero river. According to local tradition, he was the spiritual guide of San Prudencio, patron saint of Álava. The chapel that was eventually built around his cave is an eighteenth-century Baroque structure, but the cave itself is ancient — its walls still show traces of the hermit's cell. Soria has honoured him since the Middle Ages: his feast day on 2 October is the city's main fiesta.
