Museo Numantino

The Museo Numantino is a well-organised archaeology museum tracing the long human history of the Soria region, from prehistory through the Iron Age, the Roman period, and into the medieval. Its strongest section covers the Celtiberians — the mixed Celtic-Iberian people who built Numantia and dozens of other settlements across this plateau — with pottery, weapons, metalwork, and ceramics of a quality that challenges the standard picture of these cultures as primitive.

The collection was assembled from excavations at Numantia and across the province. Among the highlights are the Numantine ceramics, famous for their figurative decoration — animals, warriors, geometric patterns — which are strikingly unlike Roman pottery and uniquely local. The museum is a worthwhile stop before or after visiting the Numantia site.
