Iglesia de San Pablo

The facade of San Pablo is the most spectacular piece of Isabelline Gothic in Valladolid — a wall of stone lace, every surface carved with saints, heraldic devices, foliage, and tiny human figures, rising in tiers to a great rose window. The bottom half was completed around 1500 by Simón de Colonia; the upper portions were added a century later by Juan de las Navas.

The interior, by contrast, is severe and rather plain: a single high nave with later side chapels. Most visitors come for the facade and the Plaza de San Pablo it dominates, with the Palacio Real on the south side. Together they form one of the most atmospheric corners of the old city.

A story
Philip II was baptised in this church in 1527 — his father, the Emperor Charles V, was in residence at the nearby royal palace at the time. A century later Philip IV was also baptised here. For a few decades around 1600 this square was effectively the centre of the Spanish empire.
