Santa María la Antigua

A small Romanesque-Gothic church just behind the cathedral, easily missed but architecturally rich. The square tower is 12th-century Romanesque, with three storeys of paired round-arched windows — one of the finest pieces of Romanesque work in the city. The body of the church is later, rebuilt in Gothic style in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The interior is plain, kept simple after a restoration that stripped away accumulated baroque additions. Santa María la Antigua and the unfinished cathedral facade together form one of the most photographed corners of the old town, especially at dusk when the stone catches the warm light.
