Els Quatre Gats

Modernista café where Picasso held his first exhibition

Address c/Montsió 5

This Modernista café opened in 1897 as a gathering place for Barcelona's bohemian artists and intellectuals — Picasso held his first exhibition here in 1900, and Gaudí, Casas, and Rusiñol were regulars. The building itself, designed by Puig i Cadafalch, is a Gothic Revival gem tucked into a narrow lane just off Portal de l'Àngel.

Today it operates as a restaurant and café. The interior preserves the original tiled floors and ironwork, and a reproduction of Ramon Casas' famous tandem-bicycle painting hangs in the main room. The food is decent if tourist-priced, but you're really paying for the setting. Come for a coffee and soak in over a century of artistic history.
