Castell de la Trinitat

The Castell de la Trinitat sits on a rocky bluff at the southern entrance to the Bay of Roses, opposite the Ciutadella and built to crossfire with it. The route to the fort is a windy 20-minute walk along a clifftop path from the road above the small bay at Almadrava, with sweeping views down to the citadel.

The fort itself, partially restored, is open to visitors. The ramparts and the lower casemates can be explored, and an interpretation centre explains the design and the various sieges. The setting is dramatic; the views of the bay are the real reward.

A story
The fort's irregular five-pointed plan was designed by the Italian military engineer Luís Pizaño in the 1540s to follow the rocky promontory's natural shape, a more pragmatic approach than the rigid star bastions of contemporary Italian forts. It held out for two years against French siege guns in 1808 before its defenders blew it up rather than surrender.
