Monument als Castellers

Bronze monument to Catalonia's human-tower tradition, with figures climbing 12 metres into the air

Address Rambla Nova, 43003 Tarragona
Admission Free

A vivid bronze sculpture on the Rambla Nova depicting a complete Catalan castell, or human tower — the trunk of strong adults at the base, the smaller climbers above, and at the top a child of seven or eight raising a hand in the traditional gesture that completes the tower. Designed by Francesc Anglès i García and installed in 1999, the monument is roughly twelve metres tall and life-size from base to summit.

A five-minute stop, but worth it for the explanation of the tradition. The biennial Concurs de Castells in early October (held in Tarragona's Tarraco Arena) is the world championship of the sport — book accommodation months ahead if you want to attend.

A story
The *castell* (human tower) is the most distinctive surviving folk tradition in Catalonia, and Tarragona has been one of its centres since the late 18th century. The biennial **Concurs de Castells** competition in Tarragona's bullring draws teams from across Catalonia and is considered the world championship of castelling. Towers of nine, ten, or even eleven storeys are routinely built; falls happen, and serious injury is rare but not unheard of.
