The most important Roman archaeology museum in Catalonia, in a Neoclassical 1850 building on the Plaça del Rei in the heart of the old town. The collection is built around finds from the Roman city: marble portrait busts of emperors and citizens, fine bronzes, glass, ceramics, an unusual collection of inscribed marble tablets, and — the highlight — a series of mosaic floors lifted from the Roman villas of the Tarraco hinterland. The 2nd-century Mosaic of the Medusa is the most famous, but the fish mosaic from a coastal villa is the most charming.
Allow 2 hours. The upper floor's exhibition on daily life in Tarraco is unusually well done. The museum building itself sits directly on top of Roman foundations and you can glimpse them through glass panels in the entrance hall.
