A 16th-century palace built into the Alcazaba walls, now home to the Provincial Archaeological Museum. The collection spans prehistory to the Moorish period, with over 15,000 items from sites across the province — much of it brought together from the dolmens, Roman villas and Visigothic settlements scattered across Extremadura.
The Megalithic section is particularly strong, with stelae from the Tartessian and Iron Age cultures of the southwest. The Roman mosaics and Moorish ceramics are worth a look, and the setting inside the fortress adds to the atmosphere. Admission is free, and the museum is small enough to see in an hour.
