The civic heart of modern Badajoz, a tree-shaded square framed by the cathedral on one side and the Casa Consistorial — the 19th-century town hall with its tile-covered spire — on the other. The square fills with locals from early evening, when the cafes put out their tables and the surrounding streets close to traffic.
This is the place to start an evening: a coffee or vermouth here, then a wander into the surrounding pedestrian streets where most of the city's tapas bars are concentrated. The cathedral's main facade dominates the south side; the rest is a mix of 19th and 20th-century buildings rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War.
