The graceful 15th-century stone bridge that carries the road from Portugal across the Guadiana into Badajoz. It has 32 segmental arches and stretches almost 600 metres, making it one of the longest medieval bridges in Spain. The current bridge replaced an earlier wooden structure that was repeatedly swept away in floods.
It has been damaged and rebuilt many times — most spectacularly in 1603, when a flood took out half the arches. The bridge is pedestrianised now and gives the best view of the Puerta de Palmas, the Alcazaba, and the old city walls rising beyond.
