The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Helga de Alvear is, by any standard, a serious contemporary art institution — and its presence in a city of 95,000 in rural Extremadura is one of those surprising facts that makes Spain interesting. The collection, donated by German gallerist Helga de Alvear, contains around 2,700 works spanning the last five decades of international contemporary art.
The new building (opened 2021) is a clean architectural intervention just outside the old town walls. Permanent galleries hold major pieces by international names alongside important Spanish artists, and the temporary exhibition programme is ambitious. A half-day spent here is time well spent, particularly if you've already walked the medieval town and want something to contrast it with. Admission is free on certain days; check before visiting.
