The Casa del Mitreo is one of the most complete Roman houses in Spain, a suburban villa from the second century AD, excavated on the southern edge of the modern town. It is named for the Mithraic sanctuary believed to have stood nearby; whether the house itself was associated with the cult is uncertain. What survives is enough of the floor plan, hypocaust, and mosaics to walk through the rooms as a Roman would have done.
The undisputed highlight is the Cosmological Mosaic, with personifications of Sky, Earth, Sea, and the natural elements — Wind, Light, the Seasons, the Rivers, even Mortality. The image is unique in Roman Spain. Combined ticket with the theatre and amphitheatre; bring water on hot days, the walk out is exposed.
