Things to Do

Almost everything worth seeing in Mérida is Roman, and almost all of it sits within a fifteen-minute walk of the Plaza de España. The big-ticket pair — the theatre and the amphitheatre — share one ticket and one entrance with the adjacent Roman Forum site; allow at least half a day. The Museo Nacional de Arte Romano is the indoor companion to the open-air ruins and should not be skipped. Beyond that, ruins surface across the modern town: temple columns by a roundabout, an aqueduct cresting a city park, a Roman bridge in daily use until 1991.
