Augusta Emerita was the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania, and so it had a second forum dedicated to provincial administration as well as the municipal forum. The Foro Provincial is a recent excavation, only properly investigated since the 1990s. What you can see today are the foundations of monumental porticos, statue bases, and inscriptions, all sitting in a small archaeological park between the modern town and the Albarregas river.
It is a quieter, less reconstructed cousin of the municipal forum. Information panels in Spanish and English explain how the layout reflected the city's role as capital of a third of the Iberian Peninsula. Free, open all hours.
