Monte de San Pedro

Hilltop park with panoramic views, a glass elevator, and old coastal guns

Monte de San Pedro is a hilltop park about two kilometres northwest of the city centre, offering the best panoramic views over La Coruña, the harbour, and the Atlantic coast. The park is free to enter and popular with locals for evening walks and weekend picnics.

The most entertaining way to reach the summit is the Ascensor Panorámico — a large glass observation capsule that slowly rises up the steep southern face of the hill from the Paseo Marítimo. At the top, the Cúpula Atlántica visitor centre has exhibits on the city and coast, and two large 1920s coastal defence guns still point toward the sea.

The park also contains a maze, a café, and a restaurant. On clear days the views extend far out to the Atlantic; on stormy days the spectacle of waves breaking against the headland below is reason enough to make the trip.

A story
Two enormous naval guns still point seaward from Monte de San Pedro, installed in the 1920s as part of the city's coastal defences. They were never fired in anger. The tunnels and bunkers beneath the hill are partly accessible on guided tours, and the guns themselves have become an incongruous backdrop for weekend picnics.
