Praia de Area Maior

Praia de Area Maior is one of the best beaches in the Ría de Muros e Noia and probably the main reason to come to this part of Galicia in summer. It lies about 6 kilometres east of Muros along the southern shore of the ría — a long, exposed, practically undeveloped Atlantic beach with fine sand, consistent surf, and strong winds that make it a destination for kitesurfers and windsurfers as well as swimmers.

The water is cold by Mediterranean standards but acceptable for Atlantic-hardened swimmers in July and August. The beach faces north-northeast, which means the morning light is particularly good and the afternoon can be breezy. There is no direct bus service; a car or bicycle is the practical way to reach it from Muros.

A story
Area Maior translates simply as "big sand," which is accurate. The beach stretches for nearly three kilometres without a development in sight — no hotels, no beach bars, no parasol rental. This is increasingly rare on the Spanish Atlantic coast. The dunes behind the beach are protected as part of the Corrubedo Natural Park system, which is what kept the developers out.
