The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Ourense is housed in the former Episcopal Palace next to the cathedral — a suitably grand setting for a collection that spans Galicia's prehistory through to the medieval period. The Roman section is particularly strong, reflecting the density of Roman settlement in the Ourense basin; highlights include fine mosaic floors, votive altars, and everyday objects from the Roman town that preceded the modern city.
The medieval collection includes Visigothic and early Christian pieces, and there are galleries devoted to Galician folk art and ethnography. The building itself is worth a look: a Renaissance palace with a handsome courtyard.
